ShutterCue Privacy Policy
Introduction
Digital Jackalope, LLC ("we," "us," or "our") operates the ShutterCue mobile application (the "App"). ShutterCue is a camera settings reference tool that helps photographers pick a starting exposure and the matching camera menu settings for a given body, lens, scenario, and light.
This Privacy Policy explains what information the App does and does not handle. By using the App, you agree to the practices described here. If you do not agree, do not use the App.
1. Information We Collect
Apart from the optional Ask assistant (see Section 3), we do not collect any personal information. ShutterCue has no account system and no sign-in. We do not collect your name, email address, location, contacts, or photos, and we do not use advertising identifiers or sell data to anyone. When you use Ask, the limited information that leaves your device, and how it is handled, is described in Section 3.
1.1 Data You Create in the App (Stored Only on Your Device)
To make the App useful, the following is stored locally on your device and never transmitted to us:
- My Gear: the cameras and lenses you add to your kit.
- Profiles: the gear-and-scenario setups you choose to save for one-tap recall.
- Preferences: your in-app settings and selections.
Storage: this data is held using standard on-device storage (SharedPreferences on Android, the equivalent user-defaults store on iOS). It is not encrypted by the App beyond the protections your operating system provides, and it never leaves your device unless you back up your device through Apple or Google.
1.2 No Analytics, Crash Reporting, or Tracking
The App contains no analytics SDKs, no advertising SDKs, no crash-reporting SDKs, and no third-party tracking of any kind. We have no way to see how you use the App.
2. Sharing a Recommendation
ShutterCue lets you share a recommendation as text. When you choose to share:
- The content is generated on your device from your current selection.
- It is handed to your operating system's standard share sheet, and you decide where it goes.
- We do not receive, store, or process anything you share.
Any app or person you choose to share with is outside our control and governed by their own privacy practices.
3. Internet Access & the Ask Assistant
ShutterCue is offline-first. Its core features — choosing gear, getting a recommendation, saving profiles, and managing My Gear — work with no internet connection and transmit nothing. The only feature that uses the internet is Ask, the optional AI photography assistant. You send data only when you choose to use Ask.
3.1 What Ask sends
When you send a question in Ask, the following leaves your device over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection:
- Your question, and the earlier messages in that same conversation, so the assistant has context for its answer.
- The gear in your kit, if you've set up My Gear — the camera and lens models you've marked as owned, so answers can default to your equipment. These are equipment models, not personal details.
- A random, app-generated install identifier, used only to enforce a daily usage limit and prevent abuse. It is not your name, your device's hardware ID, or an advertising ID, and it is not linked to your identity.
- An app-attestation token (via Firebase App Check) that confirms the request comes from a genuine, unmodified copy of the App. It guards the assistant against abuse and carries no personal data.
We do not attach your name, email, contacts, photos, or location — the App holds none of these.
3.2 Who processes your question
Your question is sent to a proxy service we operate on Cloudflare Workers, which forwards it to our AI provider, Anthropic, whose Claude model generates the answer that streams back to you. Cloudflare and Anthropic act as our service providers, processing the request on our behalf to deliver the feature. We do not use your questions for advertising and we do not sell them. Anthropic processes API requests under its commercial terms and, by default, does not use them to train its models. Their handling of the data is governed by their own policies:
- Anthropic: anthropic.com/legal/privacy
- Cloudflare: cloudflare.com/privacypolicy
3.3 What we keep
Ask is designed to retain as little as possible. Your conversations live only in memory on your device while the chat is open — they are not saved after you close or clear the chat, and we do not store your questions or the assistant's answers on our servers. The only thing our service retains is an anonymous per-install counter that enforces the daily question limit; it resets on a rolling daily basis and holds no question content. Any operational logging is minimal and never includes the text of your questions or answers.
3.4 Voice input
If you ask by voice, the speech-to-text conversion is performed by your phone's own dictation feature (Apple or Google), governed by your device and OS settings. ShutterCue does not record, store, or transmit audio — only the resulting text is sent, exactly as if you had typed it.
3.5 Your choice
Ask is entirely optional. If you never use it, ShutterCue transmits nothing and behaves as a fully offline app. Within Ask, you can also restrict the assistant to gear you own ("Only use my gear") in Settings.
4. Purchases
ShutterCue is currently free and contains no in-app purchases. If paid features are added in the future, all billing will be handled directly by the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. We would not collect or store your payment card information, and this policy would be updated before any such feature is released.
5. Children's Privacy
ShutterCue does not collect personal information from anyone, including children. The App is rated for general audiences and contains no objectionable content. Because we collect no data, there is no personal information of a child (or anyone) for us to access, use, or disclose.
6. Your Rights and Control
Because all of your data lives on your device, you are always in full control of it:
- Edit or remove gear and profiles at any time within the App.
- Delete everything by removing your gear and profiles, or by uninstalling the App, which removes all locally stored ShutterCue data from your device.
We hold no copy of your data, so there is nothing for us to export or delete on your behalf.
7. Data Security
Apart from the optional Ask assistant (Section 3), your ShutterCue data never travels to our servers, which removes an entire category of risk. When you do use Ask, your question is sent over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection and processed only to generate your answer — we do not store it. On-device data is protected by your device's own security (passcode, biometrics, and OS-level app sandboxing). No method of electronic storage or transmission is 100% secure, but keeping everything but Ask local and account-free minimizes exposure.
8. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes take effect when posted to this page, and we will update the "Last Updated" date above. If we ever begin collecting data (for example, by adding optional analytics or cloud sync), we will revise this policy and disclose it clearly before the change takes effect.
